What is TOTA?

Towers On The Air (TOTA) is a ham radio award programme run by OK2IH that encourages operators to activate lookout towers and to make contact with them (wwtota.com).

Malaysia TOTA lists 33 lookout towers across West Malaysia, Sabah, Labuan, and Sarawak. Each tower has been assessed against the five TOTA eligibility criteria. Towers are marked as Active (fully eligible, ready to activate) or Conditional (eligible with caveats such as limited access - check the tower's notes before activating).

The official programme - rules, log uploads, cluster, awards and diplomas - is administered at wwtota.com.

For logging in the field, PoLo (Portable Logger) is the recommended app - it supports the TOTA reference format and runs on Android and iOS.

Eligibility criteria

  1. Permanent structure fixed to the ground
  2. Man-made construction (not a natural formation)
  3. Viewing function of the surrounding landscape
  4. Public accessibility permanently, seasonally, or occasionally
  5. Independent viewing structure not merely a mast or water tower without a viewing platform
